Skin Cancer: Causes and Risk Factors

Skin cancer (also known as abnormal growth of skin cells) usually develops normally on skin exposed to the sun. But this common form of cancer can also develop in areas of skin that are not normally exposed to sunlight.

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

You can reduce your risk of skin cancer by limiting or avoiding exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Checking the skin for suspicious changes can help detect skin cancer in its early stages. Early detection of skin cancer gives you the best chance for successful skin cancer treatment.
